What this map is, and what it is not. It counts people who told us, not everyone it happened to, and the difference matters: it is a floor, never an estimate of the whole. Every report on it has been confirmed by clicking a link we emailed, so one address is one person and submitting twice replaces the earlier answer rather than adding to the total. The colour is the number of reports, not a rate, so a state with more people in it will tend to sit higher. Nothing here is published except the state, what happened and the count.

We email you one link to confirm. Your report is counted once you click it, which is the only reason we ask. Your email address, your employer and the private box above are never published. The only things that go on the site are your state, what happened, the total, and the one public line if you wrote one.

What we do with it

Nobody can say how common this is, which is exactly why it keeps happening quietly. A number with states attached is what a reporter, a state legislator or another nonprofit can actually use, and it is the thing we have never been able to hand them. If you said we may contact you about your story, we will ask before anything is written, you will read it first, and you decide whether your name is on it.
