Paying for GLP-1 with HSA/FSA

What is an HSA/FSA?

This page is part of our member resources and lists trusted programs designed to help offset the cost of GLP-1 medications.

Am I Eligible to Use My HSA or FSA for This GLP-1?

Answer three quick questions to see where you stand and what to fix, if anything.

1. Do you have a documented diagnosis in your medical chart (for example, obesity, type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance, PCOS, or metabolic syndrome)?

2. Is your GLP-1 prescription clearly tied to that diagnosis in your provider’s notes or a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN)?

3. Which account are you planning to use for this GLP-1 expense?

Fill in a few details and we’ll format a Letter of Medical Necessity request you can send through your patient portal or email.

Why Your Claim Was Denied (and How to Fix It)

Click a message to see what it really means and how to fix it.

This usually means your plan administrator needs to manually verify the details before approving.

Common causes: missing itemized receipt, unclear charge description, or a new type of expense.

How to fix it: upload your detailed pharmacy receipt and, if needed, a copy of your prescription so they can match everything up.

This means the paperwork they have doesn’t clearly show that the expense treats a diagnosed medical condition.

Common causes: diagnosis not documented, prescription and diagnosis don’t match, or very generic notes.

How to fix it: ask your provider to confirm your diagnosis in your chart and, if you’re using an FSA, provide a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) that ties the GLP-1 prescription to that condition.

Your plan has flagged this as something that doesn’t qualify under IRS medical-expense rules.

Common causes: cosmetic or general wellness weight-loss programs, clinics that don’t document diagnoses, or non-compliant compounded medications.

How to fix it: make sure you’re working with a medical provider who documents a real diagnosis and prescribes GLP-1s as part of legitimate treatment, not a “lifestyle booster” or spa-style program.

Many denials can be reversed once the right documentation is on file.

What to gather:

  • Your GLP-1 prescription
  • Itemized pharmacy receipt (with date, patient name, medication, provider/pharmacy, and amount)
  • Letter of Medical Necessity (for FSAs or stricter plans)
  • A note or chart printout showing your diagnosis

Submit these through your HSA/FSA portal and, if needed, call your plan administrator to request a benefits review. Keep it factual and calm—they’re just following rules, not judging your care.
